Hitting the mark

Dear Editor:

The Aspen Youth Center (AYC) hosted its 10th annual Education Series fundraising event earlier this month. For the past 10 years AYC has been bringing authors to the valley to speak to parents and educators about a variety of issues relevant to raising children. Over the years the Education Series has brought in best-selling authors and parenting experts whose timely information is always inspiring and thought-provoking.

This year’s presentation, once again, hit the mark. Hara Estroff Marano, the author of Nation of Wimps, spoke to full houses in both Carbondale and Aspen. Her discussion about “invasive parenting” was very informative and she offered both parents and teachers twelve steps to raising healthy, independent children. If you missed her talk, you can find it at http://www.aspenyouthcenter.org.

Hara also took the time to speak to a group of high school students at AHS and hosted a lively discussion with parents at a private reception. I would like to thank all the donors who helped make this event possible, especially Esther Pearlstone and Cathy and Michael Tierney. In addition, I would like to thank the Roaring Fork Family Resource Center in RE-1 School District for underwriting the Carbondale presentation ” it was great to have such participation from our community valley-wide! Thank you to everyone who came out and supported this three-day event. The Aspen Youth Center is a tremendous asset for the youth of our valley and your support means so much.
