Hit-and-run deer downs motorcyclist

Janet Urquhart

A Carbondale man was knocked off his motorcycle by a hit-and-run deer Thursday morning, causing headaches for Highway 82 commuters, if not the motorcyclist.”I’ve got hoof prints on the left side of my head and the pavement indentation on the right side of my head,” said James Maceachen. “I’m surprised he didn’t stop to see how I was doing – hit and run, you know.”Maceachen was heading into Aspen as usual – he’s head of maintenance for Aspen Skiing Co. employee housing – when the deer apparently tried to jump over him as it crossed the highway. Instead, the animal struck Maceachen, knocking him off his 2003 Honda. “I never saw him,” Maceachen said. The State Patrol isn’t sure what became of the deer, or whether it was a doe or a buck.Maceachen was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital with minor injuries. His motorcycle is still driveable, he said, but it sustained about $2,000 worth of damage in its slide down the highway, sans driver. The accident occurred near Buttermilk at about 7:40 a.m., causing delays for commuters headed upvalley.Maceachen was wearing eye protection, but no helmet, according to the State Patrol.”Something to tell my grandkids,” Maceachen concluded.Janet Urquhart’s e-mail address is janet@aspentimes.com
