BUTTERMILK SKI AREA ” Breckenridge snowboarder Chad Otterstrom slammed the top of the superpipe while practicing about one hour before he was to make his debut in the Winter X Games’ marquee event, forcing him to pull out of Monday evening’s pipe final with a hip injury.

Otterstrom was helped out of the halfpipe by medical officials and taken in for further evaluation, but the injury wasn’t serious, only painful.

“It’s just a bad hipper,” the 29-year-old said later that night.

Otterstrom said he couldn’t really move his leg much, and that trying to walk hurt. His disappointment was softened by the fact that his seventh-place result in Sunday’s qualifying round means he will be invited back for next year’s contest.

“So that’s cool,” he said.

Luke Wynen of California took Otterstrom’s place in the final, where he finished ninth of the 10 riders.
