Hillary a no-show

Aspen Times Staff Report

Senate candidate Hillary Clinton has postponed her fund-raising visit to Aspen, choosing instead to stay in New York in the aftermath of Friday’s verdict in the murder trial of four policemen.

The first lady was expected to arrive on Saturday to raise money for her campaign to become a U.S. senator from New York state.

But according to Camilla Auger, chair of the Pitkin County Democratic Party, Clinton decided “very late on Friday” that it was not a good time to leave New York.

On Friday, jurors acquitted four police officers of second-degree murder and other charges related to the death of African immigrant Amadou Diallo. The verdict has sparked protest marches and considerable discontent in some areas of New York City, where Diallo was shot to death by the officers.

Auger said Clinton still plans to come to Aspen, where local Democrats have contributed generously to the war chest of her husband, President Bill Clinton, in the past.

But Auger said the visit had not been rescheduled for any specific date as of Sunday afternoon.
