Hiker suffers seizure, rescuers called

Aspen Times Staff Report
Aspen, CO Colorado

ASPEN ” Mountain Rescue Aspen and a Flight for Life helicopter responded to a call Wednesday after a 16-year-old Aspen Camp School for the Deaf student became ill approximately 45 minutes to an hour up the West Snowmass Trail, nine miles west of Aspen.

According to a press release issued by incident commander Ann Stephenson, the Aspen-Pitkin County Combined Communications center received a call shortly after 5 p.m. from a resident on Snowmass Creek Road. The resident had been contacted by personnel from the Aspen Camp School for the Deaf. Through the resident, the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a member of the camp’s hiking party having suddenly taken ill at an altitude of 9,200 feet.

The patient’s first reported symptoms were serious enough that Mountain Rescue Aspen was immediately mobilized and a Flight for Life helicopter was requested, according to the press release. The hiker, from Greeley, had become dizzy, was having breathing, experiencing vision problems, and reportedly had a seizure, the press release said.

By the time rescuers arrived, the patient was alert and oriented, but still was experiencing vision problems. She was transported to Aspen Valley Hospital.

In total, 18 rescue volunteers assisted in the effort, including West Eagle Search and Rescue.
