Aspen, CO ColoradoThe Roaring Fork Transportation Authority might enlist the Aspen Skiing Co. to work on solutions to affordable housing and transportation problems.RFTA is working with a nonprofit organization called the New Century Transportation Foundation to find ways to build an expanded bus system. One concept is to use RFTA property to build transit-oriented development – a high-density mix of housing and shops with transit centers.RFTA’s got the land for the transit centers but needs a partner with financial clout for the development. Enter the Skico.Skico spokesman Jeff Hanle confirmed late Thursday the company is having “high-level talks” with RFTA.Don Ensign, a partner in Aspen-based resort planner Design Workshop and a member of New Century’s board of directors, said he talked to Skico officials about the concept Wednesday and found they were interested. “They’re totally aboard” with a joint venture, Ensign said.In return for contributing funds, the Skico would get some of the affordable housing at the transit center developments, Ensign said.
