High art blocks views
Dear Editor:Please quit lying to us, Chris Bendon, that this building went through the “normal” process. Do you think we are that stupid? Who is Chris Bendon anyway? A non-elected official with way too much power. We don’t need free snow cones, free hamburgers or weird art to hide these facts:- The ugliest building in Aspen is about to be built, the Aspen Art Museum;- 30,000 finished square feet on a 10,500-square-foot lot;- the “old boy” city government approved the entire project in only one evening and circumvented the “normal” land-use approval;- the plans for the new art museum were never reviewed by Planning & Zoning – a process that can bankrupt a development (Stage 3) or take five years to approve (Lift 1);- the building designed in Japan is out of context to anything else in Aspen. It is like us sending an architect to build an A-frame in Tokyo. After this building is finished, you can write your corrupt city government to thank them for blocking the view of Aspen Mountain forever. This building will be 53 feet high from the sidewalk – much taller than any other building currently in downtown Aspen. Despite the lies from those in favor of this monstrosity it will take away the true character of our beloved town. We will be losing what was once precious to the town, the view of Aspen Mountain.Mark LeeAspen
