The $5.9 million dollar remodel of Gwyn’s High Alpine restaurant will be celebrated with a grand opening Sunday. The restaurant reopened for the season Thursday.

The restaurant has been family owned and operated for 37 years. Gwyn Knowlton, George Gordon and their daughter Whitney Gordon will welcome guests at the grand opening celebration that starts at 11 a.m. Sunday with complimentary drinks, appetizers and speeches.

The building was completely remodeled and restored in what Aspen Skiing Co. says was its largest on-mountain capital improvement venture for the season.

The building was designed by Gus Gustafson of Z Group Architects. The interior seating capacity was increased to 620 people, with a greater variety. The space includes a massive stone entry, expansive panoramic windows, an entrance bar, new bathrooms at the entrance, a seated dining room, a retail shop, a satellite hot beverage bar downstairs and updated lower level bathrooms. Outside, the grill and deck seating area has been expanded and redesigned.

The new entrance bar has a custom black walnut bar, cozy couches, flat-screen televisions and a wood-burning fireplace with restrooms on the main level. The previous cafeteria-style cafe changes to a “market” setup that will improve diners’ access to food and beverage options. The new satellite coffee and hot beverage bar is in the lower lounge area with couches and window views of the Cirque ridge line and Mount Sopris. The fine-dining restaurant has vaulted ceilings with views of High Alpine terrain and the Brush Creek Valley. Reservations are recommended for fine-dining service, which includes an extensive wine list and slippers if you want to take off your ski boots. Gwyn’s also is available for special snow cat dinners, corporate events, weddings, private events and summer events for as many as 100 people.

Gwyn will continue to skin up every other day to work at the restaurant at 10,461 feet in elevation. “If I have good tunes, it takes less than an hour from lot 12 to the restaurant,” she said. “I skin or hike up so that I can eat or drink anything that I want.”
