Hickory House bear set to return to eatery’s roof
A seasoned bear tracker, known only by the initials JME, has located the Hickory House fiberglass bear and will return it to its familiar perch atop the Main Street barbecue joint within a week.
“We had an experienced bear tracker find it for us,” said Paul Dioguardi, owner of the Hickory House. “He wouldn’t tell me where he found it, he told me he found it, that’s all.”
The ferocious-looking, life-size bear, which mysteriously disappeared from the roof of the Hickory House in May, will return to its post above the entrance way to the eatery by next Thursday, Dioguardi said.
“It’ll be up there like it never left.”
“A lot of locals and tourists have been asking about it since it disappeared,” he said. “I just hope we can just get the bear back and be back to normal. We’re going to do what we can to encourage people leave it alone.”
The restaurant probably won’t go so far as to bolt the bear to the structure, he added.
“My only plea is that people will just leave it alone. It was fun for a couple of days, but it gets old after awhile,” Dioguardi said.
Since the much-loved bear disappeared, several townsfolk and even the Aspen police have claimed to know of its whereabouts. To date though, the bear has not been seen in public. Until its return, please, just grin and bear it.
