Hershey controls his own Web site: Aspensucks.com

Aspen Times Staff Report

The “sucks” phenomenon on the Internet has grown during the last several years.

At one point an anti-Vail Web site was created under the name Vailsucks.com. Vail Resorts responded by buying the offending domain name. It then went a step further and bought Beavercreeksucks.com, Keystonesucks.com and Breckenridgesucks.com as a preventive measure.

Vail Resorts also registered the names Burnvail.com and Vailfires.com after the Two Elk restaurant was burned to the ground. Radical environmentalists took credit for the arson.

Today, when an Internet browser clicks on any of the Vail Resorts “sucks” Web sites, the simple message “No it doesn’t” comes up on the screen.

Other companies have fought the “sucks” syndrome, some more successfully than others. Dunkin’ Donuts bought Dunkindonutssucks.com to shut it down. Wal-Mart has apparently chosen to ignore Walmartsucks.com, which is up and running. And Sucks.com acts as a clearinghouse for people to explain why corporate America, in general, sucks.

While Hershey appears to control Aspensucks.com, there are other local options still available for those with an axe to grind.

According to Network Solutions, domain names such as Snowmasssucks.com, Aspenskicosucks.com and Aspenmountainsucks.com are still available, as are other resort names such as Telluridesucks.com, Steamboatsucks.com and Crestedbuttesucks.com.

And, yes, Aspentimessucks.com is also available.
