Help out on the Sunnyside

Aspen Times Staff Report

Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers is inviting volunteers to celebrate National Trails Day by helping to build a connection between the Rio Grande Trail and the Sunnyside Trail on Saturday, June 3.

The work will involve construction of one-half mile of new trail to connect the two existing trails. The link will provide better access to the Sunnyside Trail and will provide a new section of trail as it enters the riparian area along the Roaring Fork River.

The Sunnyside Trail itself crosses Red Mountain, connecting the Hunter Creek area with the western edge of Aspen. The trail currently ends in a small parking lot on McLain Flats Road.

The extended trail will increase safety for trail users by providing hikers and bicyclists with an alternative to McLain Flats Road. Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers also hopes that the connection will help to encourage trail users not to drive to the start of their ride or hike.

Landowner Mary Dominick has donated a trail easement through her property to make the trail extension possible. Support for the project comes from the Pitkin County Open Space and Trails program, Community Banks, Aspen Valley Land Trust and the Colorado State Trails Program.

Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers will provide the tools, materials, leadership and a dinner at the end of the day. To volunteer or for more information, call (970) 927-8241.
