Heck, Jordan win Basalt titles

Runners in record numbers joined the 23rd annual Basalt Half-Marathon Saturday.

Pete Heck of Carbondale, one of the premier runners in the region, won the men’s division in 1:12.15.

Kristi Jordan of Boulder, one of several Front Range runners who participated this year, won the women’s division. She was fourth overall in winning the women’s title in 1:28.24.

Anne Nerbonne of Aspen was second in the women’s race in 1:29.43. David Buck of Glenwood Springs was second to Heck in the men’s race (1:21.37).

A record 136 runners finished the Basalt Half-Marathon, a benefit for Lions Club community projects.

Another record fell Saturday when Irving Weiss of Boulder, age 80, became the oldest runner to ever finish the Basalt Half-Marathon.

In other weekend running events, Jason Page and Becca Blay won the 5K titles in the Aspen Youth Center 5K, staged with the Ducky Derby.

Page, who finished second to Heck in the Mt. Sopris Runoff last month, won the downtown 5K in 16:57.04.

Aspen High School senior Jonathan Severy was second in 17:16.71. He is the defending Colorado state champion in cross country (3A).

Blay won the women’s title in 21:28.60. Catherine Cussaguet was second in 23:13.30.
