Hazard closes Highway 82

Aspen Times staff report
Aspen, CO Colorado

OLD SNOWMASS – A wobbly power pole created a hazard near Old Snowmass Monday and forced traffic on Highway 82 to be diverted, authorities said.

A dumptruck collided with a pole just upvalley from the Old Snowmass Conoco, authorities said. It wasn’t immediately clear if there was an accident or some other circumstance created the incident. There were no injuries.

The Basalt Fire Department and Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and decided to divert traffic onto Lower River Road until the pole was stabilized. A crew from Holy Cross Energy was on the scene, stabilizing the power pole with heavy equipment.

Authorities said the goal was to reopen the highway by mid-afternoon. By shortly after 2:30 p.m., the downvalley lanes had been reopened, but upvalley lanes remained closed.
