Hayes ‘Mac’ McLendon

Delta resident and former El Jebel resident Hayes “Mac” McLendon died Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, at Carla’s Assisted Living Retreat in Olathe. He was 88 years old.Mac was born Sept. 14, 1917, to Newton and Annie (Aten) McLendon in Blanco County, Texas. He spent his childhood in Texas and Arizona and attended school in Grassland, Texas. He went to college for pilot training. Mac married Nica Caseres on Dec. 22, 1967, in Austin, Texas. The couple lived in El Jebel for 28 years. Hayes worked for the Aspen Skiing Co. for 17 years before the couple moved to Delta in 1993.Mac and his twin brother, Henry, spent their summers together in the San Juan Mountains. Hayes also became a heavy and medium pilot for B-25s, B-17s and B-29s, served as a serviceman and was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness in Delta. Survivors include his loving wife of 38 years, Nica McLendon of Delta; one daughter, Debra Lynn Whitkol and her husband, Bubba, of Blanco, Texas; two grandsons, Kenneth Hayes McLendon and John Roberts; three granddaughters, Michele McLendon, Tanya Reed and Brandi Treisch; and several nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren. Mac was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, his twin brother and four sisters.A celebration of his life will take place next summer.
