Havin’ a good time

Every spring when Widespread Panic tickets go on sale for a trio of June shows at Red Rocks Amphitheater, they sell out in record time. The Georgia band commands a fan base around the world, and Aspen is no exception.

Last weekend when Widespread performed at the venue outside of Denver, Aspen was well-represented. Hordes of locals converged on the show for another weekend of tunes.

“I love it. I do it every year,” said Scott Norris of the annual event. “This is the perfect venue. The views couldn’t be better, there’s sweet sound.”

Former Aspenite Janet Black, nee Exley, and her husband, Jon Black, flew in from Atlanta to catch the third show and then spend a week in Aspen. “These are my boys,” said Jon of the band. “You know, we’re all from Georgia.”

Jenny Hirsch also used to live in Aspen, but moved to Southern California last year. She and her fiance Chris Jaurigue ended a five-month trip around the world with a weekend of Widespread. “We first met at this concert two years ago,” she explained. “I think when we get married our first song will be `Old Joe,’ in honor of the band.”

Law student Dean Rudas flew out to Denver for the weekend from San Diego. Music appreciation is a trait that runs in his family. His father is an independent music producer who works with Luciano Pavarotti and other opera singers. “My dad always asks me why I travel to see this band. I just explain it’s no different than him traveling to Italy to hear a new tenor.”

Paul Hresko left Aspen a few years ago and moved to Denver.

“This weekend is always like a homecoming for me. I get to see all my friends from Aspen.”
