Have compassion with housing

Dear Editor:

Thank you for bringing the housing situations of Susan Johnson and Heidi Mines forward. On the surface the city and county employee-housing program sounds great, and I know it has helped the community. However, when we read of people being evicted because life has them by the throat for the moment, while also reading of people abusing the program who somehow got past those eagle eyes, we are hard put to give this program a five-star rating.

When I retired from the library after 42 years of county service, I had several people remark that I should give up my deed-restricted home and move on. Since I had paid off my mortgage, the issue did not come up. As fate willed, I started retirement with surviving breast cancer as my new full-time job. Securing housing and finding employment probably would have been beyond my powers. Also, at 70 – very, very old in dog years – possible employers and loan officers might have responded to my needs with directions to the nearest ice floe.

We all have heard life isn’t fair, but I would like to see the housing department – supported by our tax dollars – step it up a notch for those in need of compassion as well as a home. Perhaps the mantra for this department should be: “Toe the line or walk on down it.”
