Have a say and vote

Aspen, CO Colorado

No matter how you plan to vote, the May 5 city of Aspen election is an important one. On the ballot are contests for mayor and two other seats on the City Council. The city is also asking voters’ permission to sell a piece of city-owned land at the north end of Galena Street to the Aspen Art Museum for a proposed new 30,000-square-foot museum.

This election could have long-term ramifications, and both the council races and the Art Museum have stirred up a fair share of controversy. We won’t weigh in today on any of the ongoing debates, however. Rather, we just want to ensure that as many Aspenites as possible make it to the polls. And with so many locals taking spring vacations, there’s a risk that many might accidentally overlook the election next Tuesday.

Fortunately, it’s possible to fill out an absentee ballot anytime before 5 p.m. Friday. Especially for those who might be out of town or otherwise occupied next Tuesday, we recommend going to the City Clerk’s office on the second floor of City Hall, 130 S. Galena St., and asking for an absentee ballot.

According to the clerk’s office, some 640 Aspen voters have already cast ballots this way, but it’s only an option through Friday.

The Aspen Times has already made recommendations in the mayor’s race and on Question 1, about the Art Museum. We plan to make our endorsements for the two open council seats in Friday’s newspaper.
