Tonight is the third night of Hanukkah, and two local congregations are in the midst of celebrating. The Aspen Jewish Congregation is lighting the menorah in the lobby of the Hotel Jerome every night at 6 p.m., except this Friday. A Shabbat service and Hanukkah festival will be held tomorrow night at Shlomo’s on the Green, the restaurant at the Aspen Golf Course.

The service includes a performance of the play “The Miracle Egg” by the Jewish congregation’s fifth- and sixth-graders. Tickets are $18 for adults and free for kids. For more information call 925-8245.Each night Rabbi Mendel Mintz of Chabad Aspen and the Jewish Community Center flips a switch that lights the giant menorah in Paepcke Park. It’s a favorite holiday in the Aspen Jewish community, he said.

“It’s well-celebrated here, and it’s an enjoyable holiday since it’s more about kids and families than it is about synagogue,” he said. Mintz is giving away Hanukkah kits containing menorahs and candles to anyone interested in celebrating the holiday. He can be reached at 544-3770.

Chabad Aspen’s biggest celebration of the holiday is Sunday night, the sixth night of Hanukkah, at the Aspen Recreation Center. Hanukkah on Ice! includes a giant ice menorah, ice skating to Israeli music, donuts, latkes and dreidels, a buffet dinner and a climbing tower. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and is $15. The price includes skates and dinner.”We did this event last year and we’re planning to do it annually,” Mintz said. “There’s a lot of room over there, and the whole family can come for dinner and entertainment. It was a no-brainer to do it again.”
