“Rosie Fortna is Hang Ten winner,” announced The Aspen Times from Jan. 17, 1974. “Rosie Fortna, a 27 year old former US National Women’s Champion, was the combined winner in the Hang Ten women’s professional ski races at Snowmass Resort last weekend. Ms Fortna, from Lake Eldora, Colorado, placed third in the giant slalom race Friday and second in the Saturday slalom event, winning a total of $2550. Two Aspen women who raced together both as youngsters as well as on the US team and now live in a cabin on Independence Pass, placed first and second Friday but did not place in the top three Saturday. They were Judy Nagel Davidson who won the giant slalom and Kiki Cutter who placed second. The two women were separated by .121 seconds after competing in the dual format race. Ms Cutter, 24, won $750 and Ms Davidson, 22, won $1000. Both competitors raced on the US Olympic team in 1968 as well as on the US FIS team in 1970. Ms Fortna was US National women’s Champion in 1970 and a member of the US team from 1967-71. She won $500 in the Friday competition, $750 Saturday; $300 from Hanson boots; and two tickets to Hawaii…”

Pitkin County sees first wolf depredation since reintroduction
A yearling on a cattle ranch up Pitkin County’s Capitol Creek died to wolf depredation, according to a regional cattlemen’s association official. Another yearling is missing from the ranch, but the reason is unconfirmed.
