Hands-on science expo coming to Basalt

Every middle school student between Aspen and Glenwood Springs will get an opportunity today to indulge in a hands-on evening of science exploration at Basalt Middle School.

The John McConnell Math and Science Center from Grand Junction will take over the school’s cafeteria from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Families will be treated to science demonstrations and then dive in themselves to explore engineering, building, physics and chemistry concepts.

The event is part of a new grassroots effort to bring more after-school science opportunities to students during the school year. There are numerous science-based camps — including Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) — and activities for kids during summers, but they dwindle during the school year.

Middle school parent Allison Johnson led the effort to raise money for the event. A bake sale at Back to School Night at the middle school raised more than $900. The funds are helping to pay for the Family Science Night plus supplies for the new Access Roaring Fork SecondShift after-school science class at the middle school.

Basalt Middle School Principal Jeremy Voss said he hopes the science night becomes a regular event.

“The concept of bringing families together for hands-on STEM activities is such a great way of building community and enhancing our education program,” Voss said.

A Spanish translator will be on hand to help families with translation, as well. Teachers interested in checking out the action get in free.
