Group: Aspen indoor tennis would be smash

Aspen Times Staff Report
Aspen, CO Colorado

ASPEN ” A local group of tennis nuts wants to put a bubble over four of the tennis courts at the Aspen Golf Club, and the City Council was interested enough Tuesday to put city staffers to work on the proposal.

The group, known as ACE-IT (for Aspen Community Effort for Indoor Tennis) has offered to raise private money to buy and erect the bubble, and estimated to the city that it would cost roughly $350,000 to $400,000 in up-front costs. The bubble would then be given to the city, which would pay the ongoing operational costs, according to the group’s plan.

According to ACE-IT, the bubble would be at least partially heated by the sun, which also would eliminate the need for daytime lighting; could be erected for winter use and removed for the summer months, a seasonal use that would reduce costs; and could be operational for the 2009-’10 winter season.
