Groomer at Ajax wins award

Colorado Ski Country USA recognized veteran Aspen Mountain snow groomer Steve Fischer for his expertise by naming him the slope groomer of the year.

Fischer has worked for Aspen Skiing Co. for 23 years. He’s done every task imaginable on the slopes. He has cleared trails and built terrain parks and helped plot out World Cup ski-racing courses.

“His passion has been described as second-to-none, and through his longtime service, inspires fellow co-workers to put in the long hours necessary to create some of the best slopes in the world,” Colorado Ski Country USA said in a prepared statement.

The trade association honored Fischer at its annual meeting in Denver last weekend. Other Double Diamond Awards went to Tucker Roberts, of Crested Butte, best snowmaker; and Chris Whitson, of Winter Park, best terrain master.

Ashley Sifers, of Ski Granby Ranch, was honored as instructor of the year. Jake Ziemski, of Arapahoe Basin, was the patroller of the year.
