Griff Smith gets high marks
The staff of the Aspen Middle School would like to state that it is a privilege to work for the Aspen School District and, more specifically, the middle school under the leadership of our principal, Griff Smith.
Griff has been a teacher and principal for 30 years and has provided leadership for our staff, encouraged our vision for excellence, and provided us with guidance and understanding of the developmental needs of this unique age group.
He, himself, is a lifelong learner and supports each individual staff member on his/her own journey for knowledge and personal mastery. To that end, he gives us the opportunity to work with middle school experts and keeps us aware of the latest educational research.
Over the years Griff has been a mentor to his teachers and is a master teacher for all to emulate. His concern and respect for each individual child and teacher sets a high standard for all of us.
He encourages teamwork in our school and treats all with fairness and respect. Griff has set a tone which enables both students and staff to thrive and take educational risks.
Many innovative programs have happened under Griff’s tenure and, subsequently, accolades earned. Our Outdoor Education Program has evolved into a nationally recognized model for other schools.
Griff participates and provides leadership, ensuring the success of all students on these experiential learning opportunities. The middle school has been awarded the prestigious Colorado Blue Ribbon School Award for excellence in education.
Nancy Doda, a nationally recognized middle school expert and consultant, stated in her evaluation: “The Aspen Middle School is beyond ordinary – it’s extraordinary.”
Recently, National Middle School Association consultants recognized the Aspen Middle School as an outstanding middle school. This past year the Colorado State Board of Education ranked Aspen Middle School as a “high” school based on our CSAP test scores. The Parent Information Center identified the Aspen Middle School as a “Grade A” school in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001.
This has all been achieved under the direction and guidance of Griff Smith. We are all very proud to be a part of the middle school and thank Griff for his commitment, tireless hours and inspiring leadership.
We invite the citizens of Aspen to visit and see for yourselves what makes us such an outstanding school.
