Great support, great cause

Dear Editor:

On Aug. 15, the Animal Rescue Foundation held its Second Annual Dog Jog at Paepcke Park. The event was a 5K fun run or walk with your canine companion. Our goals were to provide a fun event for the community and to raise awareness about ARF. It is fair to say that everyone had a great time and we have many people we would like to thank who made this all happen.

First of all, we would like to thank our sponsors – Alpine Bank, La Cantina, The Aspen Times, Aspen Daily News, Aspen Activities Center, Ajax Home Management, Cari Kaplan with the Dog Laundry, Rainbow Vacuums, RJ Paddywacks, Barking Beauties and Kim Seguin with Puppy Prep School. Rainbow Vacuums came and gave a great demonstration to all participants and Kim Seguin, RJ Paddywacks and Zukes provided some yummy treats for our bag and Barking Beauties provided very cute scarfs. Thank you to Don Chaney and Michael Conniff for allowing us to promote our event on their morning radio shows.

Durrance Sports was gracious enough to provide us a place for pre-race registrations and the city of Aspen, especially Steve Jaworski, gave us lots of support before and on race day and helped us answer a lot of questions. On the day of the race, Paradise Bakery, Clark’s Market and Zuke’s provided yummy treats for both the human and the canine racers. ARF and CARE were both on hand with adaptable “demo dogs” for people that needed a dog to race with.

Prizes were awarded to the top three racers as well as the smallest dog, oldest dog and dog with the best costume. We are grateful for these prizes donated by the Rocky Mountain Pet Shop. We had a great raffle with prizes from the Hotel Jerome, Of Grape and Grain, Clark’s Market, Ink! Coffee, Attic Fantasies, the Aspen Brewery, Harmony Scott, Blue Buffalo, Petco, Aspen Eclectic, Aspen Sports, Explore Booksellers, the Aspen Animal Hospital and Hairbrainz. We couldn’t have done it without all of the volunteers (you know who you are!) who showed up on race day to man the course, register the racers, and make sure that everything went smoothly.

Last but not least, a big thank you for all the participants who braved a cold and rainy morning to race in the Dog Jog. Although the weather was less than ideal, it seemed like everyone had a great time. We hope to build on this fun event in the years to come. As always, we are grateful for all of ARF’s supporters throughout the last 6 years. Without all of you, we could not have saved so many desperate and deserving abandoned animals.
