How everyone loves to dress up in their Great Gatsby-era attire for one of summertime’s favorite parties. There were feather boas, big hats on the ladies and straw hats on the men. People plan for months ahead and raid their mothers’ closets as well as costume companies for just the right dress and pearls, pearls, pearls.Hosts this year for the 14th annual Great Gatsby Party were Kyle Boyd, Kendall Chen, Greg Erwin, Jay Gatsby, Jerry Goldman, George Gracis, Don Keltner, Ricardo Montoya, John Provine, Kent Shodeen and Bob West. The party is held in a big tent in the gardens and on the lawn of the Wheeler/Stallard House – just the right elegant brick mansion to set the scene.Celebrating her 80th birthday with a big party this weekend at her home in Oro Valley, Ariz., is former longtime Aspenite Martie Whitcomb Sterling. And celebrating her 90th birthday with friends and family in Aspen on Oct. 6 was Alberta Moore.Erik Wolter, who was a social studies teacher for many years at Aspen High School, has just published a book titled “Loyalty On Trial: One American’s battle with the FBI.” Another former Aspen High teacher, Robert J. Masters, was the editor for the book. The book provides a case study of how the government responded to what it perceived to be disloyal German-American citizens during World War II, which parallels the way the government reacts today as it struggles to balance civil liberties and national security. Erik analyzes the issues raised then and now with a careful comparison of what is at stake for all Americans. The article was written by Patrick Soran and the house was photographed inside and outside by Steve Mundinger. Architect was John Galambos and he explains the warm and inviting house that he designed, “Human scale is the glue that gives a home humanity. For instance, a lot of folks want 28-foot- high ceilings in their great rooms, but then they find themselves never using that space because it feels too big. They rattle around in it.” Sounds a lot like some of the newer Aspen mansions.Ashley (Fallin) and Micah Brady of Solvang, Calif., announce the birth of a daughter, Fallin Adair Brady, on Sept. 17 in Santa Barbara. Fallin joins big brother, Laker Brady, who is 3 years old. Maternal grandparents are Pat Fallin and Dick Fallin, both of Aspen, and Kathy and Mike Brady of Solvang.Undercurrent … Aspen’s streets are paved with gold – the gold of fallen leaves, that is.
