Grateful at Highlands
I’m writing about your article about the extended season at Highlands (“Why Highlands got the nod,” April 9, 2011, The Aspen Times).
I feel like it was pretty negative and not entirely comprehensive about the attitudes of the locals who will be skiing at Highlands for the next two weeks.
As a restaurant owner at Highlands, I have to tell you that our numbers in the late season have been steady and higher than we expected. We’re extremely grateful to Aspen Skiing Co. for choosing Highlands for a longer season. These extra days will be very profitable for us and will help us through the difficult summer and shoulder seasons. To call these extra days of business that we have been given “an experiment” or “a service” couldn’t be farther from the truth.
It makes it seem that the business owners of Highlands aren’t appreciative of the gift we’ve been given by Skico. I can tell you that my fellow business owners and I feel blessed for the opportunity to do business a few more weeks. Perhaps you could have chosen to interview the owner of a business that has been around for more than a few months. We’ve been in business long enough to know that a few extra days of the lifts running can make or break a season and even a whole year.
Anyhow, the rumor is that the decision has already been made for an April 22 closing day for next year, and we couldn’t be happier. I hope you’ll join us in the next two weeks at Highlands Pizza to have some beers, enjoy some local music, and talk with our patrons about how appreciative they are that they may continue skiing well into spring.
