Government must own up to global warming

Dear Editor:I share Paul Andersen’s concerns expressed this Monday on global warming, the most pressing environmental issue of our time. And hotter than average temperatures are just the tip of the rapidly melting iceberg. Warmer temperatures will increase the rates of floods, droughts, the spread of infectious diseases and loss of habitats, to name a few. Anderson raises an interesting point in his spendocracy theory. The U.S. plays an important role in determining what steps are taken to reduce global warming pollution. Home to only five percent of world population, the U.S. is responsible for 25 percent of the world’s CO2 emissions. Yet our government continues to avoid real global warming solutions by pulling out of the Kyoto Protocol (and so avoiding mandatory caps on global warming pollution) and by passing the energy bill, which does nothing to reduce American dependency on oil, increases the risk of growing global warming impacts and fails to seriously commit to clean energy technologies that would address these problems. Consumer ability to control national emissions goes only so far. It is now up to us to demand that our government set mandatory limits on global warming pollution. Nick KusnetzWashington, D.C.
