GOP is to blame for the jobless rate

Dear Editor:

Your Jan. 27 front page tells us “jobs lost, still not regained.” I, for one, have been predicting these unexpected consequences. See my Nov. 11, 2005, letter in The Aspen Times predicting the meltdown. We are recovering at a snail’s pace.

Jobs have not come back because of two reasons:

1. Businesses that laid off millions of employees now find that they did not need all of these people in the first place, and they are making more money without them. Too many, and too much pay. Businesses will hire when there is a clear profit motive.

2. Congress should be creating stimulus programs that could put millions of unemployed back to work. But that “ain’t gonna happen,” thanks to the Republicans. Of course, it would increase our debt. But people working and paying taxes will reduce our debt in the future. Congress must respond to the pain of unemployment. You have to spend money to make money.

The Republicans are living in the past. They did a lot of nasty things to make Obama look bad. And they are still doing the same even though Obama cannot run again. Hey, you Republicans, get a grip and help the unemployed.
