Goodies and a vibrant village

Dear Editor:A little-known fact about the Base Village plan is that the town extracted an agreement from the Skico/Intrawest that front loads in the first phases of construction their expenditure of $45 million in on-mountain improvements. This includes high-speed lifts, a gondola, improved trail access and year-round recreation amenities and activities, as well as a cash contribution in excess of $7.5 million for infrastructure improvements including a Woodrun/Brush Creek roundabout, Carriage Way snowmelt, a cabriolet from Base Village to the mall, an entryway recreation center, a new fire truck, Brush Creek stream restoration and a substantial contribution to Holy Cross Electric to reduce electric rates in the village to all residents. The Skico/Intrawest has assumed the full risk of front loading these contributions and the build-out of these amenities, a large number of which will be completed and in use during 2005 and 2006. The Skico/Intrawest bit the bullet on these demands as well as committing to the construction of a 25,000-square-foot, world-class Children’s Center, and a four-star, four-diamond Westin Conference Hotel in the first phases of construction. In agreeing to the town’s demands, Skico/Intrawest is putting its money where its mouth is because they believe that this project is the ideal project to revitalize Snowmass Village and that it is right-sized to be successful for the community. Skico/Intrawest assumes all the economic and other risks inherent in a project of this magnitude, which will take six to seven years to complete. We get all the goodies up front as well as a new, vibrant and economically viable community.Vote “yes” for a better Snowmass Village. Vote “yes” for Base Village.Mel D.
