Gondola revs up for summer rides

ASPEN The Silver Queen Gondola will be back in weekend operation beginning Saturday as the summer of rides up and down Aspen Mountain commences.The lift will run Saturday through Monday for the Memorial Day weekend, then again June 2-3 and June 9-10.Starting Friday, June 15, the gondola will operate daily through Labor Day (Monday, Sept. 3) and then run on Saturdays and Sundays through the remainder of September.Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., except Saturdays, when rides up begin at 8 a.m. The last ride down is at 4:30 p.m. daily.The gondola whisks riders to the 11,212-foot summit in about 14 minutes. As always, rides down are free, but for those who aren’t quite up to the 2.5-mile trudge from town to the mountaintop (that’s 3,267 vertical feet), there’s a cost to catch a ride up, with one exception.Summertime gondola rides are free for those who purchased a Premier Pass for the 2006-07 ski season. Adults who purchased other ski passes (one-day, two-day) may purchase a daily ticket for $12.50 or a weekly pass for $25.For adults without a ski pass, summer tickets to ride up on the gondola are $22 on weekdays and $24 on weekends. A weekly adult pass is $40.Youths (13-17 years) and senior citizens can ride for $16 on weekdays and $18 on weekends; a weekly pass is $32. Children, ages 4-12, ride for $10.50 on weekdays and $12.50 on weekends; a weekly pass is $21. Children age 3 and younger ride for free.
