Golf prices dropping?
October 4, 2005
The Aspen Golf Club is contemplating reducing pass prices next season to entice locals who were apparently lured to other area courses this year.Revenues at the city’s public golf course this season missed projections by about $60,000 and the club sold about 80 fewer passes this year, compared with the summer of 2004, according to Steve Aitken, director of golf.A cold March and wet May helped hold down play. But the past few years have also brought new courses on line and some competitive deals for a round, including a $39 walk-up rate for 18 holes at River Valley Ranch in Carbondale. For a while early this spring, the Snowmass Club course was charging $45 per round, including a cart, said Jeff Woods, city parks director.”What we’re really trying to do is bring back the local,” Woods said. This year, the season pass available to local players ran $875, or $805 with a chamber discount. Next year, the course is contemplating a flat rate of $800 for a full pass, with a surcharge of $7 to $10 to play during the prime hours of 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., according to Aitken. The cost of the 20-punch pass may also drop – from $385 to $350, he said. The Aspen course has never offered a walk-up discount rate for local residents or workers, but Aitken is considering a $39-per-round walk-up rate next year for those who show a local ID. The peak rate for a guest round this season was $90 from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., $65 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. and $45 from 3:30 p.m. until closing time. The $39 rate would compare to the River Valley Ranch deal, which was offered to residents of Eagle, Pitkin, Garfield and Gunnison counties, Aitken said.”If you’re a local, it gives you a chance to get out and play a little bit,” he said. This fall, the Aspen Golf Club has been successful with a two-for-one deal, Aitken said. Two golfers could play a round for $65 after Labor Day; the price dropped to $45 on Oct. 1. The course is aiming to remain open until Nov. 1, weather permitting.Whatever changes are made to the course’s rates should be finalized in the next few weeks, Aitken said.Janet Urquhart’s e-mail address is email@example.com
