Glenwood officer shot; vest stops bullet

GLENWOOD SPRINGS ” A Glenwood Springs police officer was shot in the chest Sunday night, but a bulletproof vest helped save him.

Around 11 p.m. the officer contacted two men walking near business and storage lots south of the Glenwood Springs Airport.

The officer gave several verbal commands, however the two men continued walking away until one of the men abruptly turned and filed multiple gunshots from a handgun at the officer.

According to a press release from the Glenwood Springs Police Department, the officer was struck once. The officer returned fire as the two men fled southbound. The officer’s name was not released.

Officers from Carbondale, Rifle, Garfield County and the Colorado State Patrol all joined Glenwood police at the scene.

Several searches were conducted by the Garfield County All-Hazards Response Team. At this time the two suspects are still at large.

The suspects are described as:

– Latino male; 18-20 years old; very short hair; clean shaven; red hooded sweatshirt; lace-up boots, jeans or dark pants.

– Latino male; 18-20 years old; very short hair; clean shaven, dark blue or black hooded sweatshirt; white sneakers; jeans or dark pants.
