Glenwood market draws the crowds despite the clouds

GLENWOOD SPRINGS – The wind was blowing, and the sky looked threatening at Glenwood’s first Downtown Market of the season. But that didn’t stop the hoards who descended upon it for fresh produce, baked goods, henna tattoos and more.

Last night marked the first of a summer’s worth of Tuesday evening farmers markets in Centennial Park. This is the fifth summer of the market.

“It just kind of seems to keep improving,” said Scott Brown of Woody Creek Cellars. He is one of a handful of merchants who has had a presence at the market since its first year.

“We came because we knew there was a lot of potential,” said Carol Zandrozny of Z’s Orchards and Produce. “The ambiance is just small town, and there’s a lot of variety.”

Zandrozny’s booth was directly impacted by the wind. Early in the festival, a particularly large gust sent its tent flying, much to the surprise of the produce browsers it narrowly missed. But the tent was quickly folded and set aside, and shoppers continued their examination of the stand’s fruits and vegetables.

Booths like Zandrozny’s and Brown’s have become standards at the market. This year, they are joined by several new booths offering fresh eggs, cheese, beef and gourmet mushrooms.

Those aren’t the only new things that the market has to offer. “One major change is that we are now taking credit cards and EDTs,” said Cindy Svatos, a board member. The market is partnering with WIC (Women, Infants, and Children program). Making the market accessible to WIC members and people with EDTs (food stamps) encourages participants in these programs to eat more healthily and locally.

In honor of the 40th anniversary of Woodstock, this year’s market will have a continuing summerlong theme. Rather than previous years’ weekly emphasis on seasonal produce items, all of this year’s markets will act as a tribute to the Summer of Love.

A bulletin board is set up where people are free to pin up photos or jot down memories of life in 1969 and throughout the ’60s. Market posters feature an old-fashioned VW bug in bright, pop-art colors. And if the posters don’t bring back those memories, maybe the real thing will. Parked in the middle of Ninth Street is an actual VW bug, filled with colorful flowers.

The ’60s theme provides the market with an excuse for beefing up its care for the environment. “We’ve been trying to practice good recycling, and that’s something we’re really going to be pushing this year,” said Svatos. The market will also feature artists working with recycled materials.

Though things like the poster, car and bulletin board were visible Tuesday night, they didn’t seem to stand out that much from the crowd of people milling around. But that’s just a sign that the color and vibrancy of the Summer of Love should be a perfect fit with the market’s happy, healthy mood.

“It’s friendly, it’s comfortable. I know people. The produce seems good, and the music’s nice,” said Nancy Mooney, a local resident. Music by the Last Minute String Band filled the air as she stood waiting for a pair of small boys getting henna tattoos.

“I think it’s a great community event,” said local Walter Gallacher, a regular at the market. Stephen Bershenyi agrees. “It’s what we need to do here, to keep downtown vital.”

The Glenwood Springs Downtown Market takes place every Tuesday evening from 4 p.m. to dusk. Rain or shine, or even wind, it will take place at Centennial Park until Sept. 29.
