James Dowling, 61, of Glenwood Springs, was killed Saturday night when his Jeep Wrangler went off Four Mile Road.

Police described road conditions as wet and slushy, and it was snowing at 10:35 p.m. when Dowling lost control of the vehicle near mile marker 9. According to the Colorado State Patrol, he was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected as the Jeep spun, skidded sideways down an embankment and rolled.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dowling was on his way to his shift as a snowcat driver at Snowmass Ski Area, where he had worked for many years, according to Rebecca Waters, manager at the Brettelberg Condominiums, of which Dowling was a longtime resident.

“Jimmy was our mountain man,” Waters said, and will be widely missed at the condo complex at Sunlight Mountain. Waters said Dowling had relatives in Wisconsin and lived with his pet cats.
