Glenwood Caverns one of USA Today’s top caves in U.S.

Glenwood Caverns has been named one of the nation’s 10 best caves in the USA Today Readers’ Choice Awards.
“This is really exciting news for all of us at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park,” said Nancy Heard, general manager of the park. “Some of our newer attractions, such as the Giant Canyon Swing, get a lot of attention because of the thrill factor. Don’t get me wrong, we love that attention, but the caves are how the park started and are still the top attraction. Where else do you ride a gondola to the top of a mountain to tour a cave?”
Nominees for all categories in the 10Best Readers’ Choice Award contests are chosen by a panel of experts that include a combination of editors from USA TODAY; editors from 10Best.com; relevant expert contributors and others. All voting is digital and the 10Best Readers’ Choice Award contest is accessible on the 10Best.com website.
“To be nominated is an honor, because those 20 nominees are chosen by an expert panel,” Heard said. “Topping that off with a win that’s voted on by the public makes it even more special. Thanks to everyone who took the time to help us out with a vote for Glenwood Caverns.”
It’s the third time an attraction at the adventure park has made a USA Today top-10 list. Previous honors include being named one of the 10 Best Places to Go Underground and one of the 10 Best Roller-Coaster Rides of Your Life for the Alpine Coaster.
The caverns finished 10th in this year’s voting. Kartchner Caverns in Benson, Arizona, won the voting. Kartchner, Glenwood Caverns and Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico (at eighth) are the only caves west of the Mississippi River on the list.
Glenwood Caverns originally opened to the public as the Fairy Caves in 1895 but closed at the onset of World War I. The caves were closed for 82 years until owners Steve and Jeanne Beckley reopened the caverns in 1999.
The Beckleys have employed contemporary, scientific preservation methods to protect the living and historic sections of the caves.
Glenwood Caverns is the largest show cave that’s open to the public in Colorado and includes the most highly decorated cave room in the state, King’s Row. Two guided walking cave tours and an on-your-belly tour are available.
Over the years, the park has grown to include thrill rides, family attractions and entertainment that attract visitors from around the world.
