Give it a listen

Dear Editor:

This morning I was surfing and found through NPR five versions of “Strange Fruit.” My very progressive mother introduced me to this song through Billie Holiday in the ’50s. It is a song that needs to be heard in all its versions because we are not out of the woods yet.

It brought to mind my spring project of reading the complete history of the recent civil rights movement (1955-68) through Taylor Branch, a long but great read. People need to be refreshed to our past. Some people that need to be refreshed are those that yell racial epithets at softball games in the valley. Or those who are buying guns because they are afraid of a black president. We are so very close to “strange fruit swinging from the poplar trees” in time, my lifetime.
