Getting past racism
Dear Editor: In light of the recent graffiti threats in Snowmass and Aspen, I think it’s an important time to look at what this means and start a dialogue about the racial division in this valley.I urge people to think about their humanity and what would cause someone to want to threaten another human being. Inside, we’re all the same. We’re all capable of loving others and being kind to each other. We all have families, friends, people we care about and who care about us. We all also have struggles and hard times and make mistakes. We’re all human. This is a time to reflect on what kind of people we want to be, what kind of an environment we want to live in and raise children in. Let’s reach out to each other and be friends. Get to know people who are different than you; learn their stories and share yours; relate as human beings. I have had the opportunity to travel to many places throughout the world, and I love that. I delight in getting to know people from other countries and seeing how they live and experiencing their cultures. Learning their stories, building relationships, spreading kindness, connecting with each other – this is the way to get past racism. It saddens me to witness such threats here (as anywhere), and I encourage us to look at this as an opportunity to delve into these issues and shift to positive energy and kindness.
