Get real about small-town character

Dear Editor:We kept the S-curves to “maintain small town character,” and now I feel like a rat in a maze. The cones and barricades make the town look silly instead of charming. The drivers avoiding Main Street are Aspen’s true character – we pride ourselves on choosing alternative paths in life! Kidding aside, the line cutters are a symptom, not the problem. The problem is almost half of Aspen’s residents (let alone the rest of the county’s) live west of the S-curves. Our schools, hospital, recreation center, golf course, airport, business center and ski mountains are west. The S-curves are a bottleneck in the middle of town that makes it hard to go about your business in town. I appreciate the efforts of those who tried to craft a compromise. But the experiment demonstrated clearly that it is time to get real about our small town character, and backed up traffic is not quaint. We need a new bridge with four lanes crossing Castle Creek and we need to get rid of the useless choke points in our sole travel artery. Cones, barricades and traffic backed to the Jerome in the evening and backed to the airport in the morning is not the character I’d like memorized and protected. Please, Council, use your discretion and build the fully researched, overly studied and federally approved straight connection.Shellie RoyAspen
