Gents in Breck for Ski Town Tourney

Aspen Times Staff Report

The Gentlemen of Aspen Rugby Football Club travels to Breckenridge this weekend to compete in the annual Ski Town Tournament.

Rubgy teams from resorts towns all over the West, including Vail, Park City, Utah, Sun Valley, Idaho, and Santa Fe, New Mexico, will aim to knock off the Gentleman, the tournament’s defending champs.

“We’ve won it for many years,” said Dougald Gillies, summer coach of the Gents. “In 15 years, I think we’ve only lost it once, and that was back in the late 1980s.”

“We generally play a social side, as opposed to our full-strength, serious full-on side,” Gillies said. “Again, it’s opportunity for younger and newer guys in the club to step up to the plate and start claiming positions from the old dogs.”

All games will be played at Breckenridge’s Kingdom Park, located near the town recreation center.

On Saturday, the Gents will play Breckenridge at 11 a.m. and Park City at 4 p.m. The finals will be played Sunday at 3 p.m.

“Traditionally, (rugby) sides from anywhere that’s got a ski area and a rugby club turn up for it,” Gillies said. “It’s a great fun tournament, it’s pretty much what social rugby is all about.”
