Gents crush Dallas 31-19

Ben Husband

The Gentlemen of Aspen kicked off their season in style Saturday with a 31-19 win over the Dallas Harlequins.

It was the season opener for both teams in the Rugby Super League play opener. The league formerly was known as the Harp Super League.

But the win didn’t come easy.

After Aspen prop Lance Sigley scored the game’s first try and veteran Mark Williams kicked the conversion, Aspen took a 7-0 lead.

But Dallas stunned Aspen by ripping off 19 straight points to take a 19-7 lead at halftime.

“We didn’t play particularly well,” Aspen coach Brian Going said. “We just fell behind.”

But in typical Gentlemen-like fashion, Aspen dominated when needed.

“We didn’t panic when we were down,” Going said. “Dallas woke the boys up, and they came out in the second half and played much better.”

In the second half, Aspen got tries from Ian Walker, Chris Morrow, Jason Walker and Ben Masoe.

Williams added two conversions and Aspen scored 24 second-half points and shut down Dallas’ offense for the 31-19 win.

“That game woke the boys up,” Going said.
