Gentlemen of Aspen win Cowpie Classic rugby title
The Aspen Times
The Gentlemen of Aspen extended their perfect summer season last weekend, winning the championship of the annual Cowpie Classic rugby tournament in Steamboat Springs.
The Gents, coming off a pair of dominating home victories, won five matches over two days to take the Cowpie championship.
The Gentlemen opened with wins over the Denver Highlanders and Vail.
After victories over Littleton and Colorado Springs, the Gents of Aspen beat Boulder 31-12 in the tournament championship game.
The tournament was full-side, 15 players per side rugby.
The four players of the weekend, as selected by the Gents, are Ben Mitchell, Grant Prior, Wes LaBorte and Lungile Tshuma.
Tshuma, from Zimbabwe, is a student and rugby player at Lindenwood University in Missouri. LaBorte plays for SEC-champion LSU.
Prior and Mitchell are both international players spending the summer with the Gentlemen of Aspen rugby club.
The Gents won the annual fourth of July holiday game two weeks ago, beating the Misfits 52-24 before a big crowd at Rio Grande Park.
Earlier, the Gents topped Breckenridge and Steamboat Springs.
The Gents will take their unbeaten 8-0 summer record to Vail for a Saturday afternoon game.
