Gear Review: Gift Giving
If you’re looking for unique, yet practical, gifts for outdoor adventurers, here are some memorable items.
Arc’teryx Beta SL Jacket
This completely waterproof jacket sheds water like no one’s business. I initially tested it full blast under the faucet, and it repelled everything. Then I took it out during the big snowstorm, and it passed. For heavy rain, I recommend loosening the adjustable wrist cuffs so moisture can stream off — and cover much of your hands — rather than tightening them, which can create a runoff channel. The next-generation, PFC-free GORE-TEX ePE membrane is also windproof and breathable. It’s Arc’teryx’s lightest Beta, so it’s perfect for packing on a dive or other tropical trip, as well as on mountain treks. The hood easily fits over a ski helmet, the inner pocket fits a phone, and the outer pocket zippers are also waterproof. The trim fit eliminates a bulky, boxy look while still accommodating underlayers. It does make some crinkly noise, but its technical features well make up for that.

BOTE Inflatable Aero Couch and Aero Table Classic
Après tailgating, lake- and pool-side parties, and car camping have just gotten a whole lot more comfortable and fun with BOTE’s inflatable couch and table. Constructed of military-grade PVC, you can bang these babies around with little risk of damage, and dirt cleans up with a wipe. I like to bring a pillow for back support, since the 26-inch seating depth affords plenty of leg room. Its 56-inch length accommodates up to 500 pounds. Weighing about 17 pounds each with ultra-padded handles, both the couch and table are easy to carry. The table holds 230 pounds (I laid on it to stretch to avoid dirty ground) and measures 4 feet long, 30 inches wide. It makes the perfect companion, complete with magnetic attachments for compatible tumblers, for a picnic full of drinks and food. I began inflatable SUPing before it caught on, and it always attracted curiosity and envy; these patent-pending items do the same, while amping up the festivities.

ExPed Megamat Duo
This 4-inch thick inflatable mat easily fits two people, and it comes in sizes up to a queen if you want extra room. Even when my partner moves around in his sleep, it doesn’t make everything jiggle. It’s extremely easy to inflate, with its included pump, and it’s incredibly soft on the skin, yet firm on the spine. The even (as opposed to ridged) foam core provides plenty of support and includes a pressure-relieving stretch surface for total comfort. Its 8.1 R-Value is designed for temperatures down to -40 degrees, but my cold-karma keeps me from testing that. I have, however, taken it out — with a down comforter — on my deck on cold, starry nights to gaze up at the sky, and remained cozy. It also makes a great mattress for extra guests during busy holidays, so they get a restful sleep.

Glerups Boot with Leather Sole
After taking a workshop with a Native American who swore by walking barefoot, or at least with leather soles, I started walking barefoot on trails in the summer and looking for leather soles for the fall. Whether you buy the concept of grounding or just chalk up the power of nature to feeling more centered outdoors, I’ve shifted from mind-scattering, over-computerization to calm and joyful faster and more deeply while walking barefoot or in leather soles. But, “earthing” aside, these comfy, over-the-ankle boots make great indoor slippers, keeping my feet warm, but not sweaty, with or without socks. I get itchy with most wool, but Glerups produces an itch-free, durable wool mix that hugs my bare foot in softness. Meanwhile, the soles are made of chrome-free calfskin, taking care to protect animals and the environment. Sizes come in European measurements. I have a pretty solid 7 ½, and my bare toe hit the front with a 37 EU, so if you’re a half size, you might size up, especially if you wear socks with the slippers, though they will stretch a little.

ABD Earrings and Bracelet
Discarded bicycle inner tubes meet durable fashion in ABD’s jewelry line. The nearly weightless earrings feel like nothing is hanging, despite the fact that the tree pose earrings measure a nice, long 3 inches. Other designs, such as the feather, offer five lengths, ranging from 1-4 inches long. The longer earrings can still get a bit hidden in my long, curly brown hair, so don’t be afraid to go big if you have long, darker hair. Earring hooks are made from non-allergenic stainless steel, and there are so many designs you’re sure to find something for just about everyone. Some of the bracelet designs add a little punk-rock style, while others include a modern twist on mountains or river bubbles. I love the tropical leaf bracelet, as it fuses dainty with artistic upcycled rubber. Bracelets come in two lengths and offer three slots to ensure a snug fit. The bracelets smudge a bit during the first few wears, but soap and water takes care of that.
