Garfield County to continue manager search this summer

GLENWOOD SPRINGS – Garfield County commissioners will resume their search for a new county manager starting in July.The move comes nearly two months after the commissioners rejected a slate of five finalists for the county manager position following a series of interviews in late March.The county remains under contract with the California-based executive search consulting firm Peckham & McKenney “until the position is filled,” acting county manager Andrew Gorgey said during the regular Monday Board of County Commissioners meeting.That contract called for a base fee of $15,500, plus expenses related to the search up to $22,500.”We are obligated for some additional expenses for a second search,” Gorgey said. “I believe we have waited a sufficient amount of time for the applicant pool to settle down.”At the time Garfield County was interviewing its finalists, multiple searches for government administrative positions were ongoing in Colorado. The five finalists came out of a field of 53 initial applicants for the position.Gorgey has been pulling double duty as county attorney and acting county manager since January. Following the decision to reject the previous field of county manager candidates, the commissioners agreed to reward Gorgey with an extra $3,000 per month pay.”Drew and the rest of the staff have done an admirable job in the interim,” Commissioner Mike Samson said. “It is time to move on, and hopefully we will get a strong field of candidates and have a new county manager within four or five months.”The county is looking for a new county manager to replace longtime former manager Ed Green, who was dismissed without cause in January by the commissioners.Green, a Rifle resident, has been named a finalist for several county and municipal manager positions in Colorado and across the country, including most recently in Clatsop County, Ore.jstroud@postindependent.com
