Garfield County seeks cop impersonator

GLENWOOD SPRINGS ” The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a report of a man posing as a deputy on Interstate 70 near New Castle, and warning motorists to be cautious.
According to a statement from the sheriff’s office, a female driver said she was pulled over near New Castle by a man driving a dark-green sedan equipped with red and blue emergency lights.
The incident occurred at about 11 a.m. on March 7.
The Sheriff’s Office said the woman reported a man got out of the sedan and approached her vehicle, identified himself as a sheriff’s deputy, and attempted to gather personal information from her.
According to the sheriff’s office, the woman said she became suspicious of the situation when his conduct toward her became “unprofessional.” The woman refused to give any personal information out and the suspect left shortly afterward.
The man was described as approximately 5-foot-9 to 6-feet tall, weighing 150 to 160 pounds, and is suspected to be in his 30s. He was wearing dark-green uniform pants and shirt with yellow piping around the pockets and “Sheriff” printed on the back, and a “duty style” belt with a night stick.
The sheriff’s office is encouraging citizens to call 911 immediately if they are suspicious of any contact with someone claiming to be a law enforcement officer.
Garfield County Crime Stoppers is also seeking information regarding the case; anyone with information can remain anonymous. Tipsters can earn a $1,000 reward by providing information that leads to an arrest in the case by calling 945-0101.
