Garfield County courthouse evacuated after bomb threat

GLENWOOD SPRINGS – The Garfield County Courthouse and the Garfield County building across the street were evacuated after a bomb threat Tuesday morning.

According to Garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallario, bomb squad officers and a bomb-sniffing dog were summoned from Grand Junction to conduct a sweep of the building.

“We’ve told everybody that we are done for business for the day,” he said.

Vallario said someone called the Garfield County Court Clerk’s office Tuesday morning and said there was a bomb was in the building that would explode sometime in the afternoon. The caller reportedly sounded like an irate man, the sheriff said.

The Garfield County building, across Eighth Street from the courthouse, was also evacuated because there was a possible connection involving a child-custody case, Vallario said. The Human Services office, which manages those cases, is housed in that building.

“They apparently had a bad day in court or have been stewing about something – we just don’t know yet,” Vallario said. “But, we are tracking down some leads.”

This is the second time the courthouse has been evacuated because of a bomb threat since February.
