Garfield County Airport scores $13.5 million grant

Aspen Times Staff Report
Aspen, CO Colorado

RIFLE, Colo. ” The Garfield County Regional Airport will get $13.5 million in federal funding to upgrade its runway, Congressman John Salazar announced Tuesday.

The airport near Rifle is in the second year of a three-year project to upgrade runway safety areas to better accommodate jet aircraft. The safety area around the runway will be expanded from 300 to 500 feet. The slope of the 7,000-foot long runway will also be reduced by lowering the east end about seven feet and raising the west end about 14 feet. Work will also allow an increase in aircraft instrument approaches.

The Garfield County Regional Airport is the second facility in the region to receive a substantial federal grant this year. The Eagle County Airport is undertaking a $22 million project to lengthen its runway, which will make it easier for jets to operate there during summer months. The federal government is paying for 95 percent of that project.

Pitkin County wants a piece of the pie as well. It launched an environmental analysis earlier this year on lengthening the runway at the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport. Federal funding will be sought for that project.
