RIFLE, Color. – Officials will not allow any pyrotechnic elements as part of the upcoming Garfield County Air Show, due to the extreme fire danger and the current Stage 2 fire restrictions in the county.

However, the Aeroshell Aerobatic Team has been added as a new attraction at the July 13-14 event, along with several other additional performers.

Past air shows have included several acts involving pyrotechnics, such as rockets, fireworks and a wall of fire.

“In light of the Stage 2 Fire Restrictions implemented June 22, airport staff members have changed our featured events to preserve the safety and well-being of our community,” said airport director Brian Condie in a Friday announcement.

“We want to align our event with Garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallario’s decision to implement this fire ban along with other state and federal agencies, and present yet another safe, fun, free community event,” Condie said.

The Aeroshell Aerobatic Team is a multi-plane demonstration group based in Birmingham, Ala. It will perform in the Friday night show.

“To sum up what we do, it is similar to the Blue Angels in formation flying, but with World War II propeller-driven airplanes instead of jets,” explained lead pilot Mark Henley. “We will fly four airplanes in our formations, as we have done in performances for 28 years. We have never done a show in Colorado, and are very excited to perform at Rifle.”

Other additions to the air show event included a Friday night concert by Matt Younkin and the Otto the Helicopter lights show.

The dates and times of the show remain the same as planned, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, July 13, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, at the Garfield County Airport near Rifle.

In addition to the air performances, the Denver Broncos Country Caravan outreach program from 5-7 p.m. on July 13 will include appearances by and autographs from Broncos celebrities, raffle prizes, a city flag signing, activities for kids, and a cheerleader performance.
