Gail Carol Smith

Gail Carol Smith, 76, of Carbondale, formerly of Chicago, passed away Jan. 25, 2009, at Heritage Park Nursing Home in Carbondale.

She was born Feb. 19, 1932, in Chicago, to Carl and Libby Smith. A teacher, Gail taught in Alsip and Oaklawn, Ill.; California; Aspen; Bermuda; England; France and Japan. She was a former employee of Colorado Mountain College.

She was an artist, skier, environmentalist, outdoor advocate, and a lover of music. She was a “woman for all seasons.”



Survivors include brothers William Smith of Orland Park, Ill. and Charles (Colette) Smith of Marlow, England; cousins Jack Sebesta and Madaline Oakley; five nephews and nieces; and five great-nephews and nieces.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Carbondale Council on the Arts and Humanities, 645 Main St., Carbondale, CO 81623, or Crystal Valley Environmental Protection Agency, in care of John Stickney, 76 Seven Oaks Road, Carbondale, CO 81623.




A memorial service will be held from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Village Smithy Restaurant, Fourth and Main streets in Carbondale.
