Free Pitkin County bus passes for state employees?

Aspen Times staff report
Aspen, CO Colorado

ASPEN – Pitkin County commissioners will decide whether state employees working in the 9th Judicial District court system at the county courthouse will continue to receive free bus passes.

The county provides Roaring Fork Transportation Authority bus passes to employees at a cost of about $70,000 annually. The expenditure was reviewed when the county looked at trimming its 2010 budget, but the benefit was ultimately left intact, according to Phylis Mattice, internal services director for the county.

The sum includes roughly $4,000 for bus passes for four state employees who use RFTA to commute to and from work at the courthouse in Aspen. In all, five state employees, plus two judges paid by the state, work in the county.

Staffers in the district attorney’s office are also eligible for free bus passes, but the DA’s budget is, in part, funded by Pitkin County.

The county will cease providing bus passes for court employees unless the commissioners want the practice to continue, Mattice said.

RFTA zone passes are issued twice a year. The five-month winter pass and a seven-month summer pass are good for unlimited RFTA travel.

It’s more difficult, however, to retrieve a pass from a departing employee when the individual is employed by the state, Mattice noted.

“We don’t know when they leave – they’re not our employees,” she said.
