No ticket to the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Labor Day Experience? No problem. Make your own Labor Day experience (and do your wallet a favor) by taking advantage of Aspen’s many free happenings over the holiday weekend.


Aspen Saturday Market: The 18-year-old market features nearly 100 local vendors from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday through early October. (Hours will shift from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. after this weekend).

The market makes a U-shape from the corner of Galena Street and Hopkins Avenue to Hunter Street and back to the intersection of Hyman Avenue and Galena Street. All products sold at the Aspen Saturday Market are made, grown or produced in Colorado.

MotherLode Volleyball Classic: The 44th annual volleyball tournament takes place this weekend through Monday.

Aspen Artisans Market: Aspens artisans will showcase and sell their art at The Gonzo Gallery (the second floor of the former Boogies building) through Monday. For more information, email

Aspen Art Museum: Drop-in spotlight tours led by museum staff every Saturday and Wednesday at 1 p.m. Admission to the Aspen Art Museum also is free. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is closed Mondays.

Shakespeare in the Park: A performance of the pastoral comedy “As You Like It” will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Galena Plaza.

Pianist Frank Todaro live: The Aspen musician will perform on the patio of Maru Aspen sushi restaurant from 6 to 10 p.m.


Bluegrass Sundays: Last chance to ride the Silver Queen Gondola before it closes for the season and to check out the bluegrass performances on the Sundeck patio at the top of Aspen Mountain from noon to 3 p.m. Note: Event is free but gondola pass must still be purchased.

Basalt town government has it wrong in TABOR snafu, former mayors say

Current Basalt officials say the town government has violated the Colorado Taxpayers’ Bill of Right by increasing the property tax mill levy over the prior years 10 times since the mid-2000s. Two former mayors contend the mill levy could be adjusted in any given year as long as it didn’t exceed the mill levy in 1994. It’s a $2 million question.
